Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Immortalized on Pluto

Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Immortalized on Pluto – It really has been greater than 60 years since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay first reached the summit of Mt. Everest, but even today they‘re still being remembered for the historical feat. The newest honor came earlier soon once the International Astronomical Union announced the names of a couple prominent features that were recently discovered upon the dwarf planet Pluto. These geological formations were first identified from the New Horizon spacecraft in July of 2015, but as scientists have sifted with the data collected in that mission, they‘ve begun to provide names towards the more impressive features.

Since Pluto was originally named to the god from the underworld, most of the names assigned to these newly discovered formations offer similar monikers. As an example, perhaps one of the locations upon the new map of Pluto’s surface bears the name Sleipnir Fossa to the eight-legged horse that Odin rode straight into the underworld in Norse mythology. Similarly, Virgil Fossae is named in honor of Dante’s guide through hell and purgatory inside the Divine Comedy. Other locations received names that honored Sputnik 1, the very first manmade satellite, along with Clyde Tombaugh, the American astronomer who first identified Pluto in 1930.

But, also mixed in with individuals mythological and scientific names were those of Hillary and Norgay also. Tenzing Montes and Hillary Montes are now two mountain ranges located upon the surface of Pluto, each of and that is obviously named to its respective mountaineer.

The 2 climbers had numerous awards and untold adulation heaped upon them when they were alive, but I’d venture to guess that neither the strategies every considered that the mountain range on another planet could be named after them. Inside the mountaineering world they‘re already towering giants who cast an extended shadow over climbing history. Now, they will do the same thing upon the surface of the very most distant planet in your solar system.
