This park is well worth visiting. Teddy Roosevelt National Park is divided into two sections, the Northern and Southern. During our visit, an open road straight into the Southern Unit was being repaved and was graded right all the way down to gravel, so after spending a few nights in Medora, we opted to drive towards the Northern Unit (about an hours drive ) to ensure that we could begin to see the park. We‘re so glad we did, and actually wished that many of us had stayed here not only one night. The campground is nestled a couple of miles straight into the park. In case you continue on the most road, you‘ll eliminate the scenic drive, which is really a need to do. You should have the chance to discover bison, bighorn sheep and deer, all which we saw on our drive! The views from the badlands will also be spectacular here. Back at camp, you will see paved sites, large grassy areas and an abundance of secluded and much more open sites (your preference ! ) during this first come, first served campground. Travelers listed below are few, so there will be lots of sites to select from. During our stay, only two or three other campers stayed inside the park. A couple of sites offer some glimpses from the badlands, but many don‘t.

All offer picnic tables and fire rings. The Little Missouri River which carved the Badlands here is adjacent to camp and can also be accessed in the front from the campground via a trail. An amphitheater with evening programs, picnic areas and also a Visitor’s Center are available. We loved this park to its wide open spaces, pull through sites and also the wildlife. Parents, watch your kids closely ! ! ! Bison are actually in abundance here and roam the park, even the campground. Our son was within view of people, about fifty feet from our sitting area at camp. I‘d been inside the rig cleaning up lunch dishes, my hubby was napping and our older son was reading his book. All the sudden, our little one playing inside the dirt let out a scream. I looked up and froze : Two or three HUGE (you realize just how huge when they‘re next within your 8 year old ) bison were walking through camp, right next to our son. Although he wasn‘t hurt, bison have been shown to become aggressive. We spoke using the camp host later than evening and he told us that the herd will sleep inside the large grassy area of camp most nights. You need to be aware ! We now have an excellent campfire story to inform !
