The campground is located just beyond the entrance and visible coming from the Visitor’s Center. It will make for a relatively busy area with traffic coming straight into the park passing the campground entrance. Low lying trees spot the lava flows that it campground is surrounded by and built upon. Interior roads are paved, site pads are crushed lava flow gravel, and sites are primitive, with merely a picnic table and charcoal grill. There aren‘t any showers, but restrooms can be found. All 51 sites here are first come first served, and that is why we opted to remain at an RV park in Arco, nearly eighteen miles northeast. Once we pulled straight into the park,
we Couldn‘t have stumbled upon a far more picturesque site of the bright orange tent pitched on a little bluff at camp with it is stark, dark surroundings. We actually wanted to remain here, and noticed that each one kinds of rigs were here, from big, beautiful class A’s to tenters. However, we opted to the laundry and hookups waiting for those later on. Summers here could be hot, so prepare appropriately. While you pass camp and travel straight into the park, you will see several hiking trails, viewpoints, and points appealing. Lava Flow Campground is closed to road traffic during winter months because of snow, but camping remains open to skiers and snowshoers.
