This beautiful state park is located adjacent to Interstate 10 about midway between Phoenix and Tuscon. Having driven past this park often times and been intrigued every time by its volcanic rock peaks spotted with saguaro cacti, I tucked it away inside my travel destination wish list.

Picacho Peak State Park, Picacho, Arizona

Most heavily visited inside the late fall through mid spring, this park offers easy on and off highway access, hiking trails galore, and beautiful sunrises and sunsets in its desert setting. The only real drawback here is slight interestate noise. A visitor’s center has exhibits featuring the flora and fauna and wildlife from the area, in addition to a little history from the site. Picacho Peak hosts the westernmost battle from the
Civil War. Today a little monument marks the location from the deadly battle in the park’s visitor’s center. Beyond the middle you will see paved roads that lead one to three campground loops and many group camping loops. Sites are spacious, scenic, and level, with site pads being paved. An electric hookup, fire pit, picnic table, and well groomed gravel patio area is found each and every site. In your short stay here we enjoyed clambering in the rocks behind our site of preference, B10. We also saw park volunteers hard at work keeping this place spic and span to its guests. There will be restrooms and showers available. Summers listed below are beastly hot, so make sure to visit throughout the milder months.
